To date, there has been many individuals over the age of 50 who has successfully swum around the 28.5-mile (45K) Manhattan Island in New York City: the members of the Manhattan Island Half Century Club.
If you know of any individuals who are not listed and who are eligible to join the Half Century Club in any open body of water, please send information on the swimmer's name, country, official time, date and location to Open Water Source via email ([email protected]). For additional information on marathon swimming records, visit the International Marathon Swimming Hall of Fame website.
The victors from Down Under who have captured the solo Manhattan Island crown include Shelley Taylor-Smith in 1985, 1987, 1988, 1989, 1998, Susie Maroney in 1990 and 1994, Tammy van Wisse in 1997, Penny Palfrey in 2007 and John van Wisse in 2000, 2008 and 2009 and Chloe Mccardel in 2010.
