Vicki Keith
Vicki Keith set 16 different world records during her illustrious career. Long-distance swimming. Marathon swimming. Ultra-marathon swimming. These are all terms to describe what Vicki did extraordinarily well. But even these terms do not give her justice. She went beyond the beyond. So far, that hallucinations were part of her swims, especially while swimming non-stop for the second straight night on the water. For Vicki did not just swim for hours and hours. No, Vicki swam for days on end. Non-stop. Through the night. Butterfly.

Beyond and Beyond!
Among her nearly too-hard-to-believe solo swims, Vicki not only set records swimming non-stop butterfly in the Catalina Channel – 14 and 53 minutes – and the English Channel – 23 hours and 33 minutes – but she also in the frigidly cold Lake Winnipeg – 18 miles in 13 hours – Juan de Fuca – 20 miles in 14 hours – and Lake Ontario – 32 miles in 31 hours.  She did marathon swims in all five Great Lakes – Lake Ontario, Lake Superior, Lake Michigan, Lake Huron and Lake Erie.

Vicki had the superhuman ability to stay in the water for extremely lengthy periods – in cold water without any protection.  She did 45 miles in 53 hours in Lake Michigan.  She did 48 miles in 46 hours and 55 minutes in Lake Huron and she did a mind-boggling 64 miles in 56 hours and 10 minutes in Lake Ontario.  And how did she prepare herself for these lengthy swims – by swimming 100 hours of non-stop swimming in pool in Ontario, Canada in 1985 and then an unworldly 129 hours and 45 minutes of non-stop swimming in a pool in 1986.  That is a little over five straight days of swimming.  So if you start swimming on Sunday at night, Vicki demonstrated the ability to swim all Monday, all Tuesday, all Wednesday, all Thursday and all Friday.

Honored throughout her native Canada, she has been an inspiration for many.  Her goal has always been to make a difference in other people’s lives – and so she has, working no less hard for those she teaches and coaches than she did for herself.  Over the course of her career, she raised over $1,000,000 for her charities.   Vicki was appointed as a member of the Order of Canada in recognition of her outstanding achievements and service.
