Open Water Swimming Timing Solutions

Timing technologies for open water swimming competitions are rapidly getting better and better.  Split timing has arrived with leadership from companies like Powerhouse Timing and instantaneous results are now available via mobile devices through innovative software solutions such as Swim Phone.  These technologies - and their implications for swimmers - are all explained at Open Water Source's Race Director Education Program, Race Officials Certification Program and Coach Certification Program

GPS Devices

Picture
There are many hardware and software solutions, but open water swimmers can map their training swims and courses taken at open water races.  One solution includes the Garmin Forerunner 305, Ascent software (for Macintosh) and Google Earth.

The steps are easy to use:

Step 1: Take off the watch straps of the GPS device and place the unit in a waterproof bag.
Step 2: Place the unit in the waterproof bag under your swim cap with the unit on the back of your head, so the GPS device faces skyward for              the best satellite signal.
Step 3: Use (Ascent) software (on a Macintosh) to overlay your swim course on Google Earth.

No More Waiting For Your Results

Picture
Timing 1.0: Years ago, swimmers used to receive sticks with numbers as they crossed the finish line.

Timing 2.0: Then timing chips started to come into the market with the triathlon market's influence.

Timing 3.0: Wrist and ankle transponders then started to be used at the higher-end and professional marathon swims.

Timing 4.0: Now the latest use of technology is             for swimmers to receive their official times and  placing within 11 seconds of crossing the finish       line through their mobile phones and devices.

No more waiting!

Preparing GPS Units for a Solo Swimmer

Watch this video below to easily and quickly use a GPS unit that can track you during a training swim or competition.

Note that some race directors will not allow a device to be dangling from your neck during a race).

High-speed Cameras Capture Finish

Picture
Whether races are local or international competitions, whether the races finish in the water or onshore, close finishes are typical.High-speed cameras are used, but even with these cameras, it takes time for the officials to sort through the close finishes.

There are still visual distortions because the swimmers are moving at different rates of speed while the finish cameras are shooting at hundreds or thousands of frames per second.  But the cameras are accurate enough - to a general precision of 1/100th of a second or greater - so results are accurate.

Share your opinions, make a request for services or provide additional information on timing companies or technologies that you use in your area.

High-speed Cameras Used At Elite Competitions

Where accuracy is demanded at the highest levels, the same sort of cameras that are used in track and rowing events are used in international open water swimming competitions.
