King and Queen of the Sea
Brazil Celebrates and Event to Remember!
Close Battles for the King & Queen Of The Sea

King of the Sea Swimmers in Brazil

Pedro Rego Monteiro
Co-Founder of the King and Queen of the Sea

Well Organized and "TV-Friendly"
The administrators of this event intentionally made it as TV-friendly as possible. For example, they shortened the course and increased the number of laps to achieve the same distance while making it easier for TV coverage.

From start lines to bleachers on the sand, they also set TV cameras on high cranes on the beach and arm scuba divers with cameras in the water to catch all the action.

They put the feeding stations on the soft sand beach so the athletes have to hustle out of the water and run past the cheering crowds and pulsating music by Zero Calibre who created the event’s theme song.

Rei e Rainha do Mar 2010
A Landmark Event in the
Sport of Open Water Swimming
Rei do Mar (King of the Sea) and Rainha do Mar (Queen of the Sea) is an outstanding series in Brazil organized by EffectSport.

The series includes 2K amateur races for swimmers of all ages, abilities and backgrounds.

The series also includes world-class competitions among some of the fastest marathon swimmers in the world.
Showcases the Sport of Open Water Swimming
The King and Queen of the Sea Light Circuit and Challenge are really stirring things up on Copacabana Beach in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Pedro Rego Monteiro and Virgilio de Castilho of Effect Sport envisioned and created the King and Queen of the Sea competition and came up with innovative practical solutions to showcasing the sport of open water swimming.

Athlete Safety a Priority
The King and Queen of the Sea open water swimming event in Brazil raises the standard for the sport in terms of spectator convenience, media coverage and -- most importantly -- the safety of the athletes.

Press Conference on Copacabana Beach in Brazil
The race between two-time FINA World Cup champion Christine Jennings of the USA and Olympian and 2009 World Cup Series champion Poliana Okimoto would certainly prove to be outstanding. The events, televised live throughout Brazil, would feature Heidi George (USA), Alejandra Gonzales (Mexico), Daniela Pinto (Portugal) and Isabele Longo, Lauren Goulart, Fernanda Goes and Betina Lorscheitter (Brazil). The aforementioned world class athletes would most certainly be in the mix throughout the race where the swimmers must exit the water for their hydration stations after every 1K to cheering fans and Brazilian music onshore.

Capturing the Moment
One day after Poliana Okimoto of Brazil and Christine Jennings of the USA faced off in the 1K Grid Sprint and sprinted to a hard-fought finish, the two aquatic warriors faced off again in the 7K Queen of the Sea (Rainha do Mar in Portuguese) on Copacabana Beach.

The finish was equally exciting - and ended similarly with Christine charging very hard up the soft sand to overtake the smaller Brazilian Olympian.

OpenWaterSource was on location to congratulate and interview Christine Jennings, the 2010 Queen of the Sea, just after she crossed the finish line.

The finishes of the 10K King of the Sea and 7K Queen of the Sea competitions came down to the very end after several of the world's top marathon swimmers, including Olympians, went stroke-for-stroke and then stride-for-stride.

The Professional Swimming Format

Olympians, world champions and professional swimmers from Germany, Portugal, the USA, South Africa and Australia face Brazil's best marathon swimmers in a format that requires the swimmers to swim 1K in the ocean followed by a 50-meter run on the soft sand where the athletes pass in front of television cameras, cheering fans and their own hydration stations.

The swimmers start based on their finish at the Grid Sprint that is held the day before the main race.

The athletes fought well and non-stop throughout the races with never a let-up from the start to the finish.
