Penny Palfrey

One of the world's greatest living adventurers

A Herculean Aquatic Adventure

Penny will attempt one of the most difficult ocean marathon swims in history: Bridging The Cayman Islands.

She will attempt to be the first person to swim between Little Cayman Island and Grand Cayman Island in the Cayman Islands between June 9th - 11th.

The nearly 80-mile swim may take her over 2 days ... a constant battle against waves, winds and currents in one of the most beautiful, visually dynamic channels in the world where the waters are every shade and hue of blue.

Penny Swims the Molokai Channel
One of the most challenging channels in the world is the 26-mile Molokai Channel.  This rough, tough, deep channel is between the islands of Oahu and Molokai in Hawaii.

In the middle of the Pacific, swimmers face currents, whitecaps, aggressive sharks and marine life of all kinds.  In the middle of the Pacific, they face massive tidal flows of water that runs between the islands – that can push swimmers off-course by miles.

The Molokai Channel is not a swim easily attempted or easily achieved.

A Quiet Confidence
Penny Palfrey, one of the world’s greatest living adventurers, attacked this channel as she does all her swims.  With a quiet confidence built on years of hard training and careful logistical planning.  She pours over tidal charts and marine data.  She seeks the advice of local experts and watermen of note.  She calls upon her years of experience in ocean conditions that can toss her around like a rag doll.
Penny’s successful Molokai Channel swim came on a day after a restless night when she was unable to sleep.  Unexpectedly prevented from sleeping because of tsunami warnings, she was evacuated from her hotel before she could lay down to sleep the night before her attempt.

The 9.0-magnitude earthquake in Japan had stirred up the Pacific Ocean like nothing in recent times.  But Mother Nature was running up against a focused, determined Australian grandmother.

A woman who raised three children and is now enjoying herself doing marathon swims around the world, Penny has the wisdom, patience and fortitude to dig deep.
Open Water Swimming - Book by Steven Munatones

To swim in conditions that would be impossible for many.  To persevere when the conditions say to get out – or never start in the first place.

Penny successfully crossed the Molokai Channel – fighting currents and waves throughout the 11 hour swim.  30 minutes of hard swimming followed by a quick 10-second feeding break.  Over and over again until she walked onshore in Oahu.

Penny is now on her way to make another record attempt – a 68-mile open ocean crossing from Little Cayman Island to Grand Cayman Island in the Caribbean Sea.

A queen of the sea, Penny exhibits the physical toughness, the mental strength and the careful preparation of a world-class adventurer.
