Greta Andersen
Greta Andersen, born a sprinter in Denmark and matured as a marathon swimmer in California, is an irrepressible superstar of the world’s waterways.  The only person in history to win both an Olympic gold medal and hold the English Channel record, she proved herself whenever she hit the water with her trademark six-beat kick and fast turnover.

Greta Andersen
Still going strong working every day at her swim school in her eighth decade, she is a testament to positive thinking, dedication and good ol’ fashion hard work. Greta took on all-comers including the greatest male swimmers of her era from warm seas to cold lakes – and often came out ahead…with a smile.

She also took on all types of solo marathon swims, from her valiant two-way crossing attempt of the English Channel in 1964 to her failed Molokai Channel crossing when she was surrounded by sharks and an escort team that feared for her life, pulling her out against her will.

She was the first person to complete a two-way crossing of a major channel, completing a 26-hour double-crossing of the Catalina Channel – and winning five professional marathon races across the English Channel and a 50-mile race in Lake Michigan.

Training 10 miles every day in the Pacific Ocean – without goggles – there is simply no ‘quit’ in Greta who easily and quickly shares laughs and good cheer with everyone who meets her on deck, in the open water or in life.

Greta was honored by the International Marathon Swimming Hall of Fame in 1964 and the International Swimming Hall of Fame in 1969 for her dual exploits in the pool and open water, a rare honor for someone who reached the pinnacle of the sport no matter where and when she hit the water.

An inspiration, a joy to be around and a kindred spirit to all who enjoy challenges and respect hard work, Open Water Wednesday welcomes the incomparable Greta Andersen.
